DONOSTIA-SAN SEBASTIÁN

Donostia-San Sebastián. A 30-minute drive from Iriarte Jauregia Hotel.
Its beauty is undeniable, but San Sebastián is more than just a city to see: tourists should feel, smell, hear and taste Donostia first-hand.
Walk from one end of Playa de la Concha to the other, take the cable car to Mount Igeldo for spectacular views, stroll through the city’s old town and taste its delicious pintxos, visit the San Telmo Museum,

relax in La Perla spa, stroll through the Puerto Viejo and visit the Aquarium, kick back on the city’s beaches, surf at La Zurriola, buy local products at the Mercado de la Bretxa, climb Mount Urgull and discover its unique hidden corners, take a boat to Santa Clara Island, discover impressive Belle Epoque architecture, sit on one of the city’s bustling terraces to watch the sunset, enjoy a show at the Victoria Eugenia Theatre , one of the most iconic buildings in the city music at the Jazz Festival and film at the San Sebastián Film Festival.

THE BASQUE COAST

Hondarribia. 40 minutes from Iriarte Jauregia Hotel.
A visit to Hondarribia is a must: stroll through the old town, check out its beautiful medieval squares and visit La Marina neighbourhood for the region’s traditional pintxos and rich fish dishes.
To visit the next coastal town, take the N-I road or drive along the coast and climb Mount Jaizkibel for unbeatable views.

Pasai Donibale. 35 minutes from Iriarte Jauregia Hotel.
This unique fishing village is built around a single street that goes up, down, around, through tunnels…you can also take a small boat to visit the singular Pasai San Pedro.

Orio. 30 min from Iriarte Jauregia Hotel.
The town’s fishing tradition stretches back for centuries, and its fishermen are known for catching the last whale of the Cantabrian.
The town boasts a lovely historic centre and its restaurants are renowned for preparing a mouth-watering grilled sea bream.
Take a quick detour on the way to the next coastal town to visit the village of Aia and its Botanical Garden, home to over 1,000 species of plants and trees, or to discover the secrets hidden in Pagoeta Natural Park.

Zarautz. 35 minutes from Iriarte Jauregia Hotel.
This vibrant surfing town is home to a beach known as one of the world’s top spots for surfing. But there is room for everyone. The large, comfortable beach is ideal for families and provides an entire range of services. The boardwalk is perfect for a stroll or simply for soaking in the atmosphere on one of its many terraces. You can rent boards and take classes at a number of surf schools Zarautz Surfing Association , Pukas , Moor , etc…

The next must-see town is Getaria.
You can reach Getaria by car (along the coast) or a less than 4 km walk along.
A less than 4 km walk along a quiet and safe route along the sea.
You can also reach the town along the Santa Bárbara, an inland path that leads to Getaria through Txakoli vineyards. A walk where the green of the vineyards blend with the blue of the Cantabrian Sea. Wonderful.

Getaria. 35 minutes from Iriarte Jauregia Hotel.
A fishing village with loads of character. Juan Sebastián Elcano was born here. Stroll through the streets and the port for a first-hand look at the town’s fishing activity, enjoy a glass of Txakoli, dine on delicious grilled fish, visit the Cristobal Balenciaga Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum and climb to the Ratón de Getaria lighthouse.

Zumaia, Deba and Mutriku. 30 minutes from Iriarte Jauregia Hotel.
TheFlyschcliffs , , one of the most important natural attractions in Europe, extend along the entire stretch of coast. Thousands of stone slabs on which all the climatic, biological and geological events of the past million years have been etched.
You can get information on this phenomenon at the Zumaia Interpretation Centre and Nautilus Museum in Mutriku, but the best way to visit this natural attraction is along the area’s hiking trails or by boat.
You can visit the Flysch to simply enjoy a panoramic view and take a photo worthy of any postcard by taking the path that starts from the Ermita de San Telmo.

INLAND GUIPUZKOA

Land of mountains, meadows, forests and valleys. Uniquely beautiful scenery and sights along with towns that boast a rich culinary and cultural tradition.

Tolosa (10 minutes) and Ordizia (15 minutes) markets:
A must-visit on any trip to the area is one of its many traditional markets. Both the Tolosa (every Saturday morning) and the Ordizia(held every Wednesday morning) markets offer the opportunity to buy top-quality local products directly from their producers, including Tolosa beans, Ibarra chili peppers, Idiazabal cheese, cider, seasonal fruits and vegetables…

Segura. 20 minutes from Iriarte Jauregia Hotel.
Its well-preserved medieval old town is worth a visit. This town is known for its religious tradition and Holy Week processions.

Zerain. 25 minutes from Iriarte Jauregia Hotel.
Typical inland village with beautiful views of Mount Aizkorri. Historically, much of the town worked in the iron mines; today, the tourist office organises activities and excursions to discover the secrets of Iron Mountain.

Zegama. 30 minutes from Iriarte Jauregia Hotel.
All you need to get to the San Adrián Tunnel is comfortable shoes and a bit of exercise. But the effort is well worth it, because a bucolic landscape and a wonderful Roman road are waiting on the other side of the tunnel.

Ezkio. 25 minutes from Iriarte Jauregia Hotel.
The town is home to the Igartubeiti Farmhouse Museum, a 16th-century building that showcases the environment, atmosphere, furniture and tools of the time. A great way to discover Basque traditions and culture.

Loyola Sanctuary . 20 minutes from Iriarte Jauregia Hotel.
A magnificent baroque sanctuary built in honour of St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuit order.
Take a stroll through the gardens and get a first-hand look at building’s dome, high altar and Bohemian glass lamp.

Oñati and Arantzazu Sanctuary. 40 minutes from Iriarte Jauregia Hotel.
Take a fascinating stroll through the village of Oñati and enjoy its impressive Renaissance buildings, including its Sancti Spiritus University. Visitors can also take a 9-km road that winds its way to the Arantzazu Sanctuary. A perfect example of contemporary Basque art, the building has served as a work space for artists like Eduardo Chillida and Néstor Basterretxea.

Natural spaces
Stunning geography makes Gipuzkoa home to an entire range of ways to enjoy the outdoors: hiking, mountain biking, surfing, fishing, diving, sailing, golf…
Enjoy views of Monte Ernio Ernio (1,078 m) from our hotel or take an easy and scenic 2-hour walk (with an elevation gain of 500 m) to reach the top. Home to legends, the mountain offers breath-taking views of the coast and inland.
Natural parks like Aiako Harria, Pagoeta, Aralar and Aizkorri offer lovely hikes suitable for the whole family as well as more demanding mountain ascents.

Gipuzkoa by bike
Another fantastic way to explore the region is to park your car and get on a bike.
The Usabal Sports Complex in Tolosa, 10 km from our hotel, has a mountain bike centre where you can pick up information on bike paths for all levels.

Old railroad tracks have been converted into greenways that provide unique trails, like the Leitzaran and Arditurri, and bikers can also ride the region’s network of bike paths, including those in San Sebastián and other locations.

Surf: La Zurriola, Zarautz, Orio, Getaria and Zumaia are famous surfing spots.

Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James): The path marked with yellow arrows also passes through Gipuzkoa. There are two alternatives, the inland (Irún to San Adrián tunnel) and the coastal routes (Mutriku to Hondarribia).

CULINARY TOURISM

Basque cuisine is known worldwide and the small region of Gipuzkoa is home to one of the biggest concentrations of Michelin stars in the world.
This is a paradise for foodies, with options suitable for all tastes and budgets. Pintxos are a prime example and global benchmark of miniature cuisine, small and delicious snacks that can be surprisingly elaborate.

One of the greatest pleasures to be had in the Basque Country is shopping in village markets, where shoppers can find the highest-quality seafood, meat, fruits and vegetables.

Local wines like Txakoli and cider have deep roots and tradition; visiting a Txakoli or a cider house and pairing their vintages with a traditional local menu is always a great idea.
The San Sebastián Gastronómika a conference that brings together the best professionals in the world of gastronomy, is celebrated annually in San Sebastián.

Bilbao. 1 hour 15 minutes from Iriarte Jauregia Hotel.
Bilbao is a vibrant, dynamic city that has undergone a remarkable urban transformation in recent years. What was once an industrial city is now a benchmark for contemporary architecture, a city marked by the genius of great architects and designers: Frank Gehry, Norman Foster, Arata Isozaki…
A good way to explore the city is by tram, making a stop at the can`t-miss Guggenheim Museum , the Arriaga Theatre , “the seven streets” of the old town and the Mercado de la Ribera.
Other top city sights include the Museum of Fine Arts , a walk through Doña Casilda Park, shopping, a coffee at any of the countless terraces and a meal at the city’s range of dining options.

Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. 1 hour 30 minutes from Iriarte Jauregia Hotel..
This is the Basque Country’s largest wetland, an ecologically rich natural area. For bird lovers, we recommend a kayak tour to see the marsh’s migratory birds.
The area is also home to the Santimamiñe , which feature stunning cave paintings, and the Bosque de Oma, a pine grove with colourfully painted tree trunks by Basque artist Agustín Ibarrola.

Gernika. 1 hour 15 minutes from Iriarte Jauregia Hotel.
This is the town –the scene of tragedy and suffering caused by the 1937 bombing– that inspired Pablo Picasso’s most emblematic painting.
The city was completely destroyed, but two of its most important symbols, La Casa de Juntas and the Tree of Gernika, can be visited today. Visitors can also check out the Peace Museum or shop for local products at the traditional Monday market.

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, Bermeo. 1 hour 30 minutes from Iriarte Jauregia Hotel.
Climbing the 241 steps leading to the top of this island is worth the effort. Once you get to the chapel the landscape is extraordinarily beautiful.
If you cannot leave your car next to the bridge that connects to the steps, park on the main road and walk the 1 km to the steps.

Pamplona. 1 hour from Iriarte Jauregia Hotel.
The city that annually transforms into the epicentre of one of the greatest parties in the world, “Los Sanfermines”, is actually a quiet town that is worth a visit any day of the year. Walk between the walls of the citadel in the park, stroll the streets of its old town, visit the cathedral or have a coffee in Plaza del Castillo.

The Côte Basque. Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Biarritz. 50 minutes from Iriarte Jauregia Hotel.
Beautiful beaches and charming towns.
Enjoy the beach, shop on the vibrant Rue Gambeta in Saint-Jean-de-Luz and try the rich macarons at Maison Adam you can also stroll along the harbour to the Roca de la Virgen, see sea lions at the Biarritz aquarium or treat yourself to a delicious cake at the Pâtisseire Miremont in Biarritz.

Sara, Ainhoa and Ezpeleta. 1 hour 20 minutes from Iriarte Jauregia Hotel.
It is impossible to take a bad photo in these lovely towns in the French Basque region, whose well-kept white houses with red, blue and green accents, small churches, and hand-ball courts are a treat to behold.

Zugarramurdi. 1 hour 30 minutes from Iriarte Jauregia Hotel.
Historically associated with witches, Zugarramurdi is a village nestled in a stunning natural environment. Its main attraction is its magical and mysterious cave, the scene of pagan rituals until the seventeenth century. Eleven women accused of witchcraft were burned at the stake during the Inquisition.

While Vitoria is not as well-known as San Sebastián and Bilbao, this city has an extensive range of attractions for visitors.
